Students in the Frame at Capital’s Top Gallery
Six photography students from Edinburgh’s Telford College will have their documentary productions showcased in the prestigious Stills in Edinburgh and critiqued by the Chief Picture Editor of The Sunday Herald, Elaine Livingstone.
Students on the HND Photography course were selected based on their portfolio of work and the successful students, Bill Rubie, Tracy Byrne, Oscar Pereira, Kevin McCollum, Christiaan Howlett and Ashley Jamieson will display their work in Stills on 23rd April. The students will be joined by their follow classmates and will present their work to Elaine Livingstone, Chief Picture Editor at The Sunday Herald, who will critique each piece and provide one to one advice to the budding photographers. The students will be joined by friends and family in the evening to celebrate their work with a drinks reception. Stills is Scotland’s leading centre for the production and display of contemporary art focusing on lens-based and digital media.
Susan Richards, Photography Lecturer at Edinburgh’s Telford College, said: “All the students on the HND Photography course have worked extremely hard and to have six of them present their work at Stills is a tremendous achievement. To showcase their work in one of Scotland’s most renowned galleries is a fantastic start to their photography career and will provide them with the contacts and the recognition required to achieve success in this highly competitive industry.”
Carrie Maginn, Operations Manager at Stills, said: “This is an excellent opportunity for the students to receive critical feedback and get a real head start in this challenging sector. Here at Stills, we are dedicated to supporting photographers throughout their careers through our gallery and newly refurbished darkrooms and digital studios. We hope that events like these will really inspire the students and help them to bridge the gap between education and professional practice.”
Elaine Livingstone, Chief Picture Editor at The Sunday Herald, said: “It is of great importance to attempt to provide our emerging talent with a realistic and relevant insight into the industry they will eventually become employed in. It is a testament to the vision of those concerned at Telford and Stills who have worked together to bring about this exciting opportunity.”
The public can see all of the HND Photography students’ masterpieces first hand as part of the HND Photography Exhibition at Elmwood Design Agency, Thistle Street, Edinburgh from 13-17 June, 2008, which is being organised by the students as part of their coursework.
